Intro to Quilting
Intro to Quilting
with Saylem Celeste
and Ellen Rutt
May 5, 2024
11am - 4pm
at Studio For Now
Detroit, MI
Together we'll learn how to sew, how to piece a quilt top, how to machine and hand quilt, how to bind, and how to let go.
Join us for our second Queer Ecology Lab workshop, Intro To Quilting Workshop with saylem mississippi celeste and Ellen Rutt. In this four hour event participants will learn the revolutionary social practice of quilting. We will discuss several place-based traditions related to quilting, align our quilting with its roots in transformative justice, and honor the quilting tradition within your own practice and lineage.
Saylem mississippi celeste (they/them) is a Detroit-born, place-based, Transformative Justice Practitioner that utilizes art and sound for collective liberation and healing. A lost generation quilter, saylem has learned to incorporate the legacy of quilting into their practice to circumvent symptoms of capitalism and other carceral systems as a means to access liberation and freedom for traditionally misrepresented communities. Celeste is currently transitioning into a full-time practitioner and community facilitator role.
